The Night Manager (2016) Review
AMC's new 6-part miniseries, THE NIGHT MANAGER, is throughly engrossing and held my attention from start to finish in the first episode, which premiered last night. The series stars Tom Hiddleston (Avengers), who plays Jonathan Pine, a night manager of a hotel in Egypt. He soon gets sucked into a fight to stop a famous arms dealer Richard Roper, who is portrayed by Hugh Laurie (House M.D.). The miniseries is flawlessly acted, which is to be expected coming from Hiddleston and Laurie, but yet still mesmerizing. The story sucks you in immediately and you find yourself hopelessly invested in the series. It has a sort of James Bond feel to it, and I could see Hiddleston's character becoming much more "Bond-like" in future episodes. Considering there were rumors that Hiddleston could be the next James Bond, I think this would be very cool to see.
It is extremely refreshing to see a miniseries that is so smart. It not only takes place during an Egyptian rebellion, but also involves the British government and intelligence. It combines politics, with intense drama and potential for some serious action sequences. The high-stakes of an international arms deal gone wrong is a welcome change to cable television.
The Night Manager's unique story, phenomenal acting, and beautiful Egyptian setting makes for a miniseries that is definitely worth your time. I am already sad that it is only 6 episodes, but am very excited to see where the story takes us. A-
